James Brian Livingstone

Mother Of Pearl

A tremendous tide rolls, crashes in - High
mist, salt sprayed, sand brazen wind. Foam
shattered water, no herring gull a-wing.

Embattled
         rock

sea weed laden shore, dishevelled dune grass -
Wild boughed, rough dancing balsam fir. Verge
of land of sand, like a whale, storm tossed sea.

Sou'wester
         hat

fish faded boots face out beyond the strand - Huge mouthed waves, harpooned hurts, wooden whale boat breaking spectral on the wind.

Red
  eyed

gaze, brother's salt long added to the brine - He swims in fin of killer whale, he scuttles over stone deaf floors of ravaged seas.

Hush
   twin

brother, close your tumultuous waters -
Rest neptune deep. Let us lay our heads
on mother of pearl, peaceful sleep.

Each August

from the broken
shores of Stewart's Lake
I watched my
father cast
between
huge rocks
where,
when present,
no great
herons stood.

As I quietly
watched him
all those years
I rarely saw
him catch anything
more than the
solitude
and perfection
of his fly
arching across radiant sky.

Loud Moon.

Blank sky.

Your august clock
strikes
once twice

thrice.

Off
weathered
planks of porch
you walk.

Rough trees surround
your
oaken thought.

You stare the skillful
owl
into his place.

You fight the bear
within
your chest.

You wrap yourself
in ivy.

Loud moon breaks
thru
the tangled leaves.

Your eyes
fierce
as the tyger.
