Aura
So here you are
with your pudgy legs
or your flat breasts
but
who are you?
And what is this mist
that sprinkles round me,
this you of your mind
that I see?
Lovely.
Bring this to me.
And I will wrap it
in flowers
and gentle prose
for what I know
is you.
Caesar
You want to believe no harm
results from a serious sin.
She's tough and hard.
The cries of pain
barely graze her skin.
Though you're less schooled
or not as bright,
she's better off with the state
you put her in.
Really, it was written
in the stars.
Who but God
could blame you
for crosses and scars?
Fantasy
Maybe it's all an illusion --
that we're talented,
that we love each other,
that our efforts matter much.
Perhaps it's like this:
What's that coming downriver --
a snake's head? a turtle?
Watching intent,
skipping rocks to make it move.
Ah, no. It's just a leaf,
unintentional, drifting by.
Maybe once it lent a little shade,
helped a breeze to cool someone.
So I see you everywhere,
know that you're not there,
and still believe
you're somewhere near.
