recognizable since 1523,
and each detail insistent
remaining with a kind
of insect precision
here how

                What he sees
is not in the text, even
though the sound of his pen
on his paper is
very loud he does not hear
how quietly I scream.

        I stop screaming.
             Erasmus
continues to write.
        The painter
has seen us both.

The moon is down and
a word yet slowly
or so, till once more
I am full of your tongue
but no words, no,
there are none or few
if who will say we
are moving still into
the darkening where
there is nowhere else
to go, and then there is
